Crypto converter or trade quote: why the numbers differ

A crypto converter is a calculation, not a promise that you can trade at that price. The live transaction preview is the place to check fees, spread, the amount you receive and quote conditions.

Separate arithmetic from execution

A converter usually multiplies an amount by an indicated price. That can help you understand scale, but it does not establish the price available for your order. Check which price feed, currency pair and timestamp it uses. A USD estimate is not the same thing as a guaranteed cash-out amount. Treat a converter with no timestamp or methodology as a rough reference, not a transaction quote.

Look for costs left out of the estimate

Coinbase says simple buys and sells include spread, and crypto-to-crypto conversions include spread in the exchange rate. It also says fees vary by payment method, size, asset and market conditions. A converter that omits those charges can show more value than the trade preview delivers. Compare the total spent with the final units received.

Expect the quote to change

Coinbase explains that its quoted spread and fees can vary, even for similar transactions. DEX trade prices are estimates and final amounts may vary within displayed slippage conditions. Read the actual preview when you are ready rather than using an old converter result. Do not make an unnecessary trade simply to test whether a number is accurate.

Keep valuation and risk separate

A converter tells you nothing about whether an asset is suitable for you or whether you can recover access to it. The SEC warns that crypto asset securities can be highly speculative and volatile and that platforms may lack important investor protections. This guide is an explanation of quotes, not a recommendation to buy, convert or hold any asset.

How does this apply to Coinbase promotions?

A converter output cannot prove that Coinbase's qualifying first purchase meets the offer or what it costs. Use the provider's order preview and the actual incentive shown to you. A hypothetical crypto value is not the realized value of a random Bitcoin reward.

Common questions

Can I cash out exactly the converter amount?

Not necessarily. The live quote, fees and withdrawal costs determine the amount available.

Is a stable-looking dollar value a safety guarantee?

No. A price calculation does not establish asset safety, liquidity or platform protections.
